The former Liverpool striker was never going to be welcomed back with open arms on October 25 after joining the Reds’ fiercest rivals on a free transfer during the summer.

However, this latest statement means that Owen’s stock has slipped even further now with supporters who once idolised him.

After spells with Real Madrid and Newcastle United, Owen surprised the football world when he ended up at Old Trafford in June.

Owen said: “It’s fantastic working with Sir Alex Ferguson.

“It’s everything you would expect from a top, top team. They are the biggest club in the world, and everything from the kit man to the canteen girls and through to the manager is first class.”

Yeah i saw that in the paper and I've also seen since his retractions saying in size of stadium real madrid id probably biggest in finance it's real madrid or barca or man city(!) but he claims man utd to be biggest in number of worldwide supporters-very hard one to back up and prove.

Have you now seen carragher saying that when he comes to anfield that he was never gonna get a warm reception but now he's gonna get one similar to adebayor got from arsenal fans!

Its said by many man utd have the biggest fan base in the world, and second only to real madrid of being the richest club in the world i think. As a united fan its great hes coming out and saying this, but to say it a couple of weeks before he goes back to anfield is a bit stupid, he will get some stick for sure
