There is one more round of fixtures to play in the group.

A Martin Palermo goal deep into injury time gave Argentina a priceless victory over Peru, but they can still fail to qualify for the World Cup, they have a very important game away to Uruguay. They have to win, if they do lose away to Uruguay then they have to rely on Chile to beat Ecuador. If they lose and Ecuador win, then Argentina are out of the tournament. If Argentina lose and Ecuador also lose, then Argentina will have to qualify via the play off’s.

If Argentina fail to qualify then it will be the first time they failed to reach the World Cup finals since 1970.

Ecuador has a tricky away tie to already qualified Chile, who might want to leap frog Paraguay into second spot, or even take first spot from Brazil, the latter seems unlikely. Ecuador need to win, a win will see the thought to the play off’s at the very least. A loss will see Ecuador fail to qualify for 2010. A draw will see they have a very slim chance of qualification, but there is a huge gap in goal difference between Ecuador and Uruguay.

A draw between Argentina and Uruguay is Ecuador’s only chance of finishing 4th Ecuador will finish in a playoff spot unless they beat Chile by 5 or more goals.

After Uruguay’s 4-2 victory over Ecuador, they have leapfrogged Ecuador into 5th place. The next game is at home to Argentina, they have to win to ensure they qualify. If they do not win they have to rely on Chile to beat Ecuador.

Unlike Argentina, Uruguay are under threat from Venezuela, but Venezuela goal difference is -5 to Uruguay 9, so Venezuela don’t stand a chance. Venezuela travel to Brazil for their last game of the group.

Colombia, who were already failed to qualify have suffered a 4-2 defeat to Chile.

As it stands the 5th place team will play Honduras in the playoff tie to reach South Africa.
