Ferrari ace Felipe Massa back on track after his freak head injuries

Felipe Massa is closing in on an emotional return to Formula One after jumping back behind the wheel for the first time since his horror injury.

Ferrari star Massa took part in a karting event in his native Brazil - his first taste of racing following his sickening accident at qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix in July when he required life-saving surgery.

The Brazilian, accompanied by personal doctor Dino Altmann, managed two laps at the Granja Viana circuit to the west of his home city of Sao Paulo before rain intervened.

However, Massa then completed 60 trouble-free laps on Tuesday, and is to continue karting over the next few days.

Ferrari have also confirmed that Massa will soon fly to the team headquarters in Maranello after where he will use the team's static simulator.

It will afford Massa and Ferrari the opportunity to assess the 28-year-old's reflexes bearing in mind his accident was just over nine weeks ago.

It was also only three weeks ago he had a titanium plate inserted into his skull at the point of impact where he was hit by a spring that had worked loose off Rubens Barrichello's Brawn GP.

Although Ferrari initially indicated Massa would not return to F1 until next year, team boss Stefano Domenicali indicated following Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix he had not ruled out the prospect of a comeback before the end of this season.

Congratulations jenson button and brawn

Quote :
Button takes both hands off the wheel and punches the air in abandoned delight. "Get in there Jenson, well done, awesome job," comes the message from Brawn. The response begins with a song: "We are the champions my friends... Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo. We are world champions. WORLD CHAMPIONS. Woo!"

i thought that was a great moment after button crossed the line..

ive always been a fan of jensons, some drivers for example hamilton Schumacher not alot of people like including myself, but buttons a top bloke not arrogant or anything, he deserves his success well done button Smile

Well done jensen he's always reminded me of eddie irvine (from a few years ago-who retired saying that he's a multi-millionaire who lives in monaco with a model and owns several fast cars and boats what more could he want!?)Well jensen button has taken it one step further and won the world championship-he's just an ordinary guy who loves his job and will now probably be motivated to race for few more years-enjoy jensen.

PostSubject: BUTTON TO JOIN MCLAREN?   Formula 1 thread EmptyFri Oct 23, 2009 6:28 am

Quote :
New world champion Jenson Button has emerged as a contender to join Lewis Hamilton in what would be a mouth-watering line-up at McLaren in 2010.

The Englishman has yet to sign a new contract for Brawn and McLaren are interested having so far failed to secure first choice Kimi Raikkonen.

"We've talked to a number of drivers," said team boss Martin Whitmarsh.

"It wouldn't be appropriate to say more than that. We'll hire the two best drivers available as we always have."

Raikkonen, who is also being chased by Toyota after being forced to leave Ferrari to make way for Fernando Alonso, has not yet decided on his future and McLaren are exploring other possibilities.

Their back-up plan if Raikkonen turned them down was to retain his fellow Finn Heikki Kovalainen, despite their reservations about his performances in races.

But following Button's failure so far to agree terms on a new contract with Brawn, they are now understood to be interested in him - which would put the two most recent world champions, and two Britons, in one highly marketable line-up.

BBC Sport has so far been unable to contact Button on Friday.

The Button-McLaren link first emerged in two national newspapers on Friday but it is understood there is substance in the story.

Button said on Tuesday that he wanted to stay with Brawn but that the team had yet to start substantive negotiations on a new deal.

Sources in F1 say the two parties have so far failed to agree on Button's salary.

He took a pay cut from £10m to £3m over the winter to help secure the survival of Brawn, which emerged from the ashes of the Honda team after the Japanese company decided to quit F1 last December.

But now he is world champion he is said to be looking for a pay rise more substantial than the one Brawn are offering.

McLaren, one of the better funded teams on the grid, would be able to pay more money than Brawn.

Button may also consider that McLaren are likely to have a faster car than Brawn in 2010, having already overtaken them for pace this year despite a poor start to the season.

But Button might be wary of teaming up with Hamilton, who is widely regarded as the out-and-out fastest driver on the grid.

Cynics will claim that the Button-McLaren link could have been leaked for one of two reasons.

It could be either a means for Button to get Brawn to up their offer to him, or it could be a way of McLaren trying to persuade Raikkonen to make up his mind.

In the background, there is also the fact that McLaren's long-term engine partner Mercedes is considering buying a large stake in the Brawn team, a move that is not popular in some parts of McLaren.

I think its rubbish,

This highlights the bad points of F1 -all the internal politics and manoeuvring and backroom dealing of teams.
